Our approach

Systemic family psychotherapy is a psychotherapeutic approach that views the family as a dynamic, ever-evolving system, where individual behavioral patterns are largely shaped by the system to which a person belongs. The connection between an individual’s psychological state and the state of their family has been recognized since the early days of family therapy in the 1940s. While the field has undergone significant modifications since then, its core focus on the interdependence of family members remains highly relevant today. This approach considers the cultural, socio-economic, and political context of clients, incorporating an analysis of power dynamics both in society and within the family itself.

Emerging from multiple theoretical influences, family therapy bridges the intrapsychic (internal processes and behaviors of an individual) and the interpersonal (relationships and interactions within the individual’s social context). By integrating social and developmental perspectives, this approach enables a comprehensive psychosocial framework. Although family dynamics form the foundation of its methodology, systemic therapy has been applied to individual work from its very inception.

Transgenerational legacies play a significant role in therapy, making it common to explore family history across generations in sessions. However, while acknowledging the past and its impact, systemic therapy is primarily focused on the present—on the “here and now.” Instead of asking why a problem emerged, the therapeutic process explores how it developed, how it persists, becomes more complex, and what function it serves.

Each session lasts one hour, with therapeutic themes unfolding throughout the process. Sessions are available in both Serbian and English, and the first session is free of charge.
